Steam Inhalations

Steam inhalations are ideal for such conditions as colds, sinus congestion, and asthma. A few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil is a favourite for steam inhalations. Sliced onions also work well if no herbs are available.

Recipes

Steam Inhalation
Pour 1 liter of water that has just boiled into a large bowl. Add 5-10 drops of essential oil and stir.

OR

Make an infusion of 25 g herb to 1 liter of water and brew for fifteen minutes. Pour into a bowl.

Lean over the bowl and cover the head and bowl with a towel. Close the eyes and inhale the steam for about ten minutes or until the preparation cools. After the therapy, it is advisable to stay in a warm room for about thirty minutes to allow the air passages to adjust and for any mucus to clear.

Upper Respiratory Preparation

  • 1 ounce (approx. 30 g) dried eucalyptus leaves
  • 1/2 ounce (approx. 12 g) dried sage leaves
  • 1/2 ounce dried juniper leaves or berries
  • 1/2 to 1 gallon (2-4 liters) water

Place herbs in water in a stainless steel, glass, or ceramic pan and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and hold the head over the steam. Cover the head and the pan with a large towel and inhale. This mixture can be reheated as often as necessary. Add more herbs when their strong smell begins to diminish.
